Based on John Steinbeck’s great American novel, Elia Kazan’s East of Eden (1955) stars James Dean in his breakthrough role as Cal Trask, a troubled young man desperate for his father’s approval while struggling in the shadow of his seemingly perfect brother. A powerful tale of family, love, jealousy and redemption, the film remains one of the most acclaimed American dramas ever made – and the story is currently setting TV screens on fire in Netflix’s acclaimed new series.
Our screening will be paired with a book event with Linda Duncan McLaughlin, an award-winning screenwriter, playwright and fiction writer and author of Original Sins, a thrilling crime novel nominated for Bloody Scotland’s Crime Debut of the Year and the CWA’s Debut Dagger, which was partly-inspired by East of Eden. The story follows Joanne Marshall as she sets out to uncover the truth about her origins, only to discover that her birth father is a convicted serial killer. As she is drawn into an unsettling relationship with the father she never knew, Joanne must confront a terrifying question: how much of his darkness lives within her?
Linda will be signing books before and after the film, and will be in conversation with our host Carmen Paddock. Into Books are offering a special deal for this event which allows you to purchase a film+book ticket that gives you access to the East of Eden screening and a copy of the Original Sins book for only £15 +booking fee! There will also be a limited number of books available to buy on the night.
